(Can someone add this to the GBA calendar?) Wednesday April 15th. Let's have coffee or breakfast at Alice's Restaurant (http://coord.info/GCRDDW http://www.alicesrestaurant.com/) and a hike on Russian Ridge to "celebrate" Tax Day! I've heard there are great views from here, but I've only seen the inside of a cloud on my previous visits!

I will arrive at Alice's around 8:45. Most likely indoors towards the right. I recommend the Blueberry Pancakes and coffee!

At around 9:45 we'll head towards the start of the hike a few miles south at the Vista Point Parking. No water or restrooms! (N 37° 19.469 W 122° 12.248 )(1500 feet ENE of http://coord.info/GC2Z2GB )
(If you don't want breakfast or are running late, meet at the Vista Point parking at 10:00)(Russian Ridge map here: http://www.openspace.org/preserves/maps ... eek_rr.pdf)

Starting at 10:00, we'll head NW on the Ridge Trail as far as "Ted Norton's Rock" (http://coord.info/GC220T2). From there, turn around towards Hawk's Ridge Trail and Alder Spring Trail. Stop at "Lemmings visit RR05 Alder Spring" (http://coord.info/GC220TH). Continuing CCW on our loop, we will take the Charquin Trail, Ancient Oaks Trail, and Bo Gimbal Trail to the top of Borel Hill, and then back to the car.

This is roughly 6 miles, including a bit of climbing (600 to 800 feet of total climbing in my rough estimate.) There are alot of other opportunities around here, if you want to stay longer. I will need to leave around 2:00.

It looks like there are 13 caches along this route. In order to keep a bit of balance between "hiking" and "geocaching obsession", let's search together and limit each cache stop to 5 minutes.

(I was going to make this an "Event" but missed the deadline!)

Monday, May 11 @ 10:00AM hike at Bear Creek Redwoods!

Join me and a few other local cachers on a monday morning at Bear Creek Redwoods, near Los Gatos. http://www.openspace.org/preserves/pr_bear_creek.asp

Did you know that this property was a Jesuit School called "Alma College" from 1934 to 1969? It was then leased out as another school for awhile, then was empty until MidPen bought it in 1999.(Maps, photos and history here: http://www.openspace.org/news/downloads ... _Study.pdf

On this hike, we'll start clockwise to the northeast to the area near "A tribute to Mrs. Foghead" http://coord.info/GC18AYN for the views. After that we'll continue clockwise, peeking at the old buildings on the campus, which are behind chain link fences. From the central campus area, we'll wander back and grab the "Bear Creek Redwoods Challenge" http://coord.info/GC2KRMA and other caches on the way.

After that, time permitting, we can head uphill into the vineyard area http://coord.info/GC1962J I need to be back at the car before 3:00, which should be plenty of time to see most, or all, of BCR.

Details:

In order to enter this property, we need to get a permit from MROSD http://www.openspace.org/activities/per ... on.asp#BCR

The BC-04 parking area (http://coord.info/GC18RVB) holds about 4 cars and I think we'll have more attendees than that. So...we need to carpool to ensure everyone gets in.

At 10:00 we'll meet at the pull-off on Old Santa Cruz Hwy, between "Posing with Smokey" http://coord.info/GC2G030 and "It's about Dam Time" http://coord.info/GC46R0T and leave the "unpermitted" cars there.

Please RSVP by Wednesday May 6th so we can coordinate who will be driving to the permit-only BC-04 gate. Please don't get a permit in advance. I'll do one "master permit" for everyone that RSVPs and the cars that we'll carpool in.

The GBA has a booth at the Santa Clara County Parks and Recreation "Festival in the Park" event at Hellyer County Park, Saturday, June 6th, 11am-3pm.

I am coordinating the event for the GBA and would like to get some other promoters of geocaching to be in the booth and explain to interested people "what Geocaching is" and why it is a great choice for fitness (the underlying theme of the festival). Of course, there are lots of other good reasons we could go on about too.

We will have a table and sunshade canopy plus a couple of chairs in our booth area. We have a new GBA banner to display on the front of the table. I have not yet received the detailed information from the Parks and Rec folks but they say it will by the end of next week. This will likely include info on when we should start setting up and tearing down. My best guess right now is that a 10 am setup for an 11 am start is likely to be fine. Teardown is likely to be 30 minutes I suppose so the overall time is roughly 10am to 3:30pm.

I'm hoping that some of you can join me to help staff the booth during the day and promote Geocaching. Let me know if you can help. We probably need at least two people in the booth at a minimum at any time and more would allow us to engage with additional folks. If you have particular times that work better for you, I will try to juggle the schedule to accommodate.

It was not accepted as an event. Violated guidelines.

Thanks, Rich (rragan)

Introduction to Geocaching
Almaden Quicksilver County Park - San Jose
Saturday June 13 2015 - 9am

Santa Clara County Parks and the GBA sponsor an introduction to geocaching class at the Wood Road trailhead at Almaden Quicksilver County Park. Class will be from 9am to noon. Come help turn muggles into cachers!

Who: You!

What: Come help with a Geocaching Class

Where: Wood Road Trailhead, Almaden Quicksilver County Park

WHERE?: Secret Trailhead #16: Woods Road

When: Saturday June 13 2015 from 9am to 12 noon

Why: It's fun!

How:

I'll talk about geocaching for about 20 minutes at the trailhead, then we will split up into groups and go caching. We'll go for an easy and scenic 3 mile hike, finding a dozen caches along the way.

Each group will consist of 4-6 students, 1-2 loaner GPSes, and an experienced geocacher. That's you! It's simple ... go caching, and give some newbies a few pointers along the way. That's it!

If you'd be interested in helping out, please post in the discussion thread: http://thegba.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6314

If you have any questions, post there or send me a message.

Thanks!
